Kushinagar: A 16-year-old high school student was allegedly murdered with a sharp weapon in the Ramkola area of Uttar Pradesh's Kushinagar district on Independence Day, police confirmed on Sunday.

According to officials, the girl, Sanjana, a resident of Kathbarwa village and a student of Janata Inter College, had left home around 7:30 AM on August 15 to attend the Independence Day flag-hoisting ceremony. However, she did not return home even by evening, prompting her family to launch a search.

Her father visited the school on Saturday to enquire about her whereabouts. However, the school authorities reportedly informed him that attendance is not taken on such occasions, and they could not confirm whether she had come to the college that day.

Later on Saturday afternoon, around 4 PM, locals spotted a dead body under a culvert near Morwan village and informed the police. The body bore multiple injuries inflicted by a sharp weapon on the neck and other parts of the body.

The police initially struggled to identify the body and sent it to the mortuary. Subsequently, the deceased was confirmed to be Sanjana.

Ramkola Station House Officer (SHO) Raj Prakash Singh stated that a youth has been detained based on preliminary accusations and is currently being questioned. He added that legal proceedings are underway, and the investigation is ongoing.
