Auraiya (UP): A woman drowned her three minor children in a river allegedly over a family dispute in the Phaphoond area of Auraiya district here in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday, police sources said.

Police sources said that Priyanka (27) got married to Avneesh a few years ago, and the couple had four children.

"Around two years ago, Avneesh died after being electrocuted, and since then, Priyanka and her children have been living with her brother-in-law, Ashish," they said.

Police sources said that on Thursday morning, Priyanka left the house with her four children and reached Keshampur Ghat alongside the Sengar River. "There she administered some psychotropic substance to her children and drowned them in the river," they said.

Police sources said that one of the children, Sonu (8), was rescued by the police, who narrated the incident to them.

"Bodies of Aditya (6), Madhav (4), and one and a half year old Mangal were fished out with the help of the divers," they said.

After getting the information, Superintendent of Police Charu Nigam reached the spot and inquired about the incident. "Priyanka has been detained and is being quizzed," they said.

SP Charu Nigam said that the exact cause of the incident is being investigated. The bodies have been sent for postmortem examination, she said.
