Uttarakhand glacier burst: 5 more bodies found, death toll mounts to 31

Chamoli: With the recovery of five more bodies on Tuesday, the death toll from the Uttarakhand glacier tragedy mounted to 31.

Rescue operation are on for pulling out around 35 workers feared trapped inside a swamped tunnel at the Tapovan power project in the district.

Rescue teams are working to locate around 170 people, mostly labourers working at power project, who are still missing.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat conducted an aerial survey and took stock of the situation.

Mr Rawat on Monday announced Rs 4 lakh ex-gratia for the next of the kin of deceased.

The incident occurred after a portion of Nanda Devi glacier broke off in the Tapovan area of Joshimath in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district on Sunday morning and damaged the Rishiganga dam on Alaknanda river. (UNI)
