Jaunpur (UP): A wanted criminal carrying a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh was killed in an encounter with the police and the Special Task Force (STF) in Badlapur area of Jaunpur district here in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday, a senior official said here.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Dr Ajaypal Sharma said that on March 5, Sumit Kumar alias Monu Chhavani along with his aides opened fire in Singramau area for extortion. "The police was carrying out raids to arrest the criminal after the incident," he said.
He said that a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh was announced on Sumit against whom 24 cases, including those of murder, were lodged in Ghazipur, Ballia, Jaunpur and Bihar.
"On Tuesday morning the police team and STF attempted to intercept Sumit near Pili river near Shahpur village," he said.
The SP said that on being intercepted by the police and STF the criminal opened fire on the police team.
In retaliatory firing Sumit sustained bullet injury. He was taken to the district hospital where the criminal succumbed during treatment," he said.
He said that two of Sumit's aides managed to escape from the spot. "The police recovered an AK-47 assault rifle, a 9 MM pistol and an SUV from the possession of the slain criminal," he said.
