Sultanpur (UP): A wanted criminal carrying a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh on his arrest was killed in an encounter with the Special Task Force (STF) of Uttar Pradesh police in Dehat Kotwali area of Sultanpur district in the wee hours of Friday, a police spokesman said.
The spokesman said that acting on specific information the STF team surrounded notorious criminal Vinod Upadhyaya in a rural area and challenged him. "In a bid to flee from the spot, Vinod opened fire on the STF team and was injured in retaliatory firing," he said.
He said that the injured criminal was taken to the district hospital where doctors declared him dead during treatment.
"Vinod had executed several crimes in Ayodhya and Gorakhpur districts. There were more than 35 cases, including that of murder and attempt to murder, were lodged against him," he said.
