Jalpaiguri: The monks of the Ramakrishna Mission on Sevoke Road have returned with the assistance of the local police after being driven out by a group of people, who went on a rampage at the ashram in West Bengal's Jalpaguri district.

Police from Bhakti Nagar station in New Jalpaiguri escorted the monks to the Ashram where they have started restoring the vandalised articles, the mission's advocate Biswabrata Basu told reporters on Thursday.

He said the RKM took possession of the land and mission, which was a gift to it by one Sushil Kumar Roy, who bought the same property from Tukra Singh long ago.

A senior police official said some 10/12 people raided the ashram on Saturday night claiming that the land had been inherited by one Pradip Roy and beat up and drove out the monks.

The police officer said they have arrested five suspects and identified others but the prime suspect Pradip Roy was still at large.

He said after going through land records, it has been found that the property is a gift to the RKM by one S K Roy but the mutation is still in the name of Tukra Singh. He said the RKM has applied for mutation and it will be done soon.

The district administration has arranged the setting up of a police picket to ensure there were no more disturbances.

There were no political link in the incident, sources added.
