Lucknow:A woman tried to immolate herself over alleged harassment by her in-laws near the Vidhan Sabha in the state capital on Tuesday. She has been admitted to the hospital in a critical condition.
Police Commissioner Sujit Kumar said that Maharajganj district resident Anjali Tiwari (35) alighted an e-rickshaw at the Capitol Cinema tiraha in the Hazratganj area. She then sprayed an inflammatory substance and set herself afire.
However, the policemen present on the spot acted swiftly and doused the fire with a blanket. The woman was later admitted to the Civil hospital in a critical condition.
Police sources said that Anjali had earlier married Akhilesh Tiwari, a resident of Maharajganj, but they had later got divorced. After changing her religion, she got married to a youth named Asif. Asif went to Saudi Arab some days after the marriage and his family had allegedly been harassing the woman.
