Shivamogga: Shivamogga district police has registered a case against jurisdictional gram panchayat officials for allegedly killing stray dogs, instead vaccinating and rehabilitating them.

Animal Rescue activists have filed a complaint with Bhadravathi Rural police on Wednesday against the gram panchayat officials, expressing doubts that some dogs could have been buried alive.

Shivamogga SP Laxmi Prasad said an expert team is conducting an inspection of the spot where the dogs were buried and submit a report to the department.

He, however, did not mention how many dogs were killed and buried.

At Least, 150 stray dogs are alleged to have been killed and some of them buried alive.

Under 1960 Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, stray dogs are protected by making an act of removing or relocating dogs illegal.

The incident came to light when the villagers heard an unusual cry of a pack of dogs arising from underground.

When the villagers dug open the ground, to their shock they found dogs buried alive.

Immediately, the villagers intimated the NGOs in Shivamogga and excavated the carcasses.

The police are investigating the case. (UNI)
