2 arrested for stealing 168 kg onions, to remain in jail for 7 days

Mumbai: Two persons were remanded into police custody for a week here on Wednesday for allegedly stealing 168 kg of onions from a vegetable market in Dongri area of south Mumbai.
The duo accused have been identified as Sabir Shaikh and Irfan Shaikh, said police.On December 8, two stall owners-Akbar and Irfan-found that their stored onion stocks of 112 and 56 kgs, respectively, have gone missing.
Both the stall owners frantically searched for the treasured extravagant commodity however the bulbs were nowhere to be found. Hence, Akbar and Irfan filed a theft case against unidentified persons at Dongri police station.
 
The cops conducted a punchnama at the spot from where the onion had gone missing and checked CCTV footages from shops and stalls outside the market to identify the accused.
The CCTV footage were circulated amongst informers which helped the police nab the accused. 
 
Acting on a tip-off, the police pinned down 33-year-old Sabir, who confessed to his crime, and named another accused Imran.The duo had committed similar thefts of onions in Byculla, Sewri, Dongri, and Wadala since the price of onions have skyrocketed.(UNI)
