Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir police claimed to have arrested three more people involved in the lynching of Deputy Superintendent of Police (Dy SP) Mohammad Ayub Pandith outside historic Jamia Masjid on June 22 night, when people were busy in prayers on the occasion of 'Lailatul Qadr'. DSP Pandith, who in civil dress was posted at Masjid for security purpose, was beaten to death by mob who caught him clicking pictures.
Three people were injured when the police officer opened fire with his service pistol. Two accused were held yesterday, three more have been arrested during the night while seven more have been identified. Director General of Police (DGP) Dr S P Vaid said the officer was for the protection of people who later lynched him to death. The killing of Pandith evoked massive condemnation from Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, mainstream and opposition political parties besides separatists who described it inhuman and against the teachings of Islam.
