Agartala: Police arrested as many as seven supporters of Indigenous Peoples’ Front of Twipra (IPFT) last night on the allegation of attacking BJP vice president and tribal leader Rampada Jamatia yesterday at Athorabhola area of Udaipur in South Tripura, which left at least 10 persons injured. The BJP has held protest rallies against the attack on its leader across the state demanding to ensure peaceful environment in the state and restore democratic atmosphere. The party however, accused CPI(M) of indulging instigation to violence. Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Udaipur Rajendra Datta said that police has made extra deployment to manage the situation.

Allegedly, IPFT cadres attacked his vehicles in the area when he was going to join a political program in the remote localities and he was narrowly escaped from the attack. Hundreds of BJP supporters rushed to the spot after getting the information of attack on their leaders. Both the groups engaged in scuffle with sticks and sharp weapons in the village, police said adding that before police reached the spot as many as 10 persons of both the groups were sustained serious injuries. Later, BJP workers blockade the road in Athorabhola demanding arrest of the culprits. Jamatia alleged, some senior leaders of IPFT were instigated their workers to attack him.

The attack on BJP leader in tribal belt is indicated that the other parties including CPI(M) have lost their base and BJP is able to make a significant presence in the hill. The innocent tribals were instigated by some vested quarters merely on vote bank politics,” alleged BJP vice president Subal Bhowmik. He said, BJP would further increase its activities in tribal infested hilly areas and the incident once again probed that CPI(M) has direct influence on IFPT and mobilised them to disturb the peaceful environment of the state to get political mileage.
