Newdelhi: The BJP leadership was today in a jubilant mood after the party 'swept' the Chandigarh municipal polls. The party has taken the victory as an endorsement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's demonetisation move and that too just before the ensuing Assembly elections in Punjab and other states.
Though the polls were confined to the Union Territory of Chandigarh, the saffron party feels that the massive mandate can be taken as a yardstick for the things to come. "I congratulate the people of Chandigarh, Sh @SanjayTandonBJP, @KirronKherBJP & our karyakartas for outstanding performance in municipal polls," party chief Amit Shah said in a tweet. While actress-turned-politician Kiron Kher is the BJP MP from Chandigarh, Tandon is Chandigarh BJP President.
Of 26 seats, the saffron party has managed absolute majority by winning at least 21 seats, giving it an edge in the run up to the ensuing Assembly polls. "BJP sweeps the corporation polls in Chandigarh. Out of the contested 22 seats, BJP likely to win 20. Akalis contested in 4 and likely to win one," party General Secretary Ram Madhav said in another tweet. "Congratulations to @BJP4Chandigarh for their spectacular victory," Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad also tweeted. (UNI)
