The weapon, a locally made single shorter used for murder, was found near the scene of crime.

This was first of its kind in many years that a ruling party lawmaker was shot dead in a brazen attack ahead of general elections.

The Officer-in-charge was removed after a report that inadequate police arrangement was made at Majitar Fulbari puja pandal where several ruling party leaders were present.

Ironically, the personal bodyguard, a West Bengal police constable, was on leave on Saturday when the unidentified assailants shot dead the middle-aged MLA from close range.

The inaugural function of the Saraswati puja was also attended by other leaders, including state minister Ratna Ghosh (Kar) and other ruling party leaders.

A separate report said the personal security guard Provash Mandal was put under suspension.

One of the eyewitnesses, who made an abortive attempt to get hold of the assailant, said the killer was sitting just behind his target on the row.

Local people also alleged during the crime power went off leaving the area dark.

Police arrested three suspects - Abhijit Pundari, Kartik Mandal and Sujit Mandal.

Local people also vandalised the house of Pundari last night after the murder took place between 19 45 hours to 20 00 hours.

The victim, was elected two times, in 2015 by-poll and 2016 Assembly election, and was a resident of Hanskhali.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Mukul Roy, among others, have been named in an FIR in relation to the crime.

Nadia district TMC observer Anubrata Mandal blamed the BJP for the murder, which was denied by BJP state president Dilip Ghosh.

Mr Ghosh said the TMC MLA was the victim of factional feud. (UNI)
