Sitapur (UP): A man picked up in connection with the murder of a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader died in police custody under mysterious circumstances after which his family members alleged that he died due to police excesses, sources said on Thursday.
Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) NP Singh said that sector in-charge of BSP Ram Lotan was beaten to death in Jiganiya village under Pisawan police station on Wednesday. "Ram Lotan's kin lodged a case against four persons in this regard," he said.
He said that on the complaint the police picked up one of the accused Raju (50) late on Wednesday evening and were taking him to the police station for quizzing. "On the way to the police station Raju complained of chest pain and headache after which he was taken to the community health center Pisawan where doctors declared him dead," he said.
The ASP said that the matter is being probed threadbare. "The post mortem will be conducted by a panel of the doctors after which further legal action will be taken. It will be clear from the autopsy report that which disease led to Raju death," he said.
It may be noted that the body of BSP leader Ram Lotan was recovered from a field under mysterious circumstances in the Pisawan area on Wednesday. Initially the police suspected that Ram Lotan died due to serious injuries he sustained after falling on the barbed wire. (UNI)
