New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a plea seeking directions for an SIT probe into the alleged forceful religious conversions of several Hindus in Haryana's Nuh district.

The apex court bench headed by CJI Ramana and comprising Justices AS Bopanna, and Hrishikesh Roy refused to entertain the Public Interest Litigation (PIL), stating the Court cannot take up the matter merely based on newspaper reports.

"Sorry, the plea is dismissed," the bench asserted.

In his plea, petitioner Adv Vishnu Shankar Jain sought for a Special Investigation Team probe consisting of members from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and National Investigation Agency (NIA) under the supervision of a retired SC judge into the alleged forceful religious conversions.

The plea had contended that local police has failed to exercise powers as a result of which the life and liberty of Hindus are in peril. (UNI)
