New Delhi: Punjab PCC chief Captain Amarinder Singh today met Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan and tendered his resignation as the Member of Parliament. Talking to reporters after meeting the Speaker, Capt Singh said he was resigning over the Supreme Court verdict on the Sutlej Yamuna Link canal. 'I have formally submitted my resignation.
We are protesting against the Sutlej Yamuna Link (SYL) canal row verdict and will take this issue to the public," Capt Singh said. Clarifying that there was no politics involved in his decision to resign from his Lok Sabha seat, Capt Singh said,'there is no politics involved in the decision. I feel strongly about the SYL issue and I being the President of Punjab Pradesh Congress and all MLAs, who have resigned, will go in public to raise this issue.'
Capt Singh added that he had already submitted his resignation on November 11 but the Speaker wanted his resignation in-person. "So, I have written a one-line resignation," he said. On November 11, Capt Singh, along with 42 Congress MLAs, had tendered his resignation from his Amritsar Lok Sabha seat after the Supreme Court's ruling on Punjab's water-sharing agreement with other states.
The Supreme Court had on November 11 passed a verdict stating it was unconstitutional for the Punjab Government to terminate a water-sharing agreement with other states. The case pertains to the age old struggle between Punjab and Haryana over the Sutlej Yamuna Link (SYL) Canal. It involves sharing of Ravi-Beas river waters largely between Punjab and Haryana, besides Rajasthan, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Chandigarh. (UNI)
