New Delhi: Board exams are likely to make a comeback for Class 10 students affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), going by indications available. At the October 25 crucial meeting of State Education ministers, a report of the Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE) will be considered by them that seeks restoration of the board exam.

However, Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar clarified to UNI that the state Education Ministers who will meeting here on Tuesday will be deciding on whether to restore the Class X board exam. 'No pressure will be put by the Central government on this issue and it is being left to them to decide for themselves,' he added.

In the event of return of Class X board exams, it will only be possible from 2018 academic year onwards, ministry sources said. In an attempt to reduce pressure on students, the CBSE Class X board examination was scrapped in 2010 and replaced with the current continuous and comprehensive evaluation under which the school children are graded throughout the year.

However, states and representative bodies of parents and teachers have argued against doing away with the exam along with the no-detention policy, blaming it for a significant drop in pass levels saying the board exam helped students prepare for the school-leaving Class XII tests. (UNI)
