New Delhi: Enforcement Directorate (ED) today filed a detailed status report in the Supreme Court regarding the alleged role of the former Finance minister, P Chidambaram, in the Aircel-Maxis deal case. The matter is being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for the alleged role of Mr Chidambaram in the Aircel-Maxis deal case. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, Subramanian Swamy told the court that Mr Chidambaram, had given illegal clearance to the deal of Aircel-Maxis case.

Now the CBI would likely to file a status report in the case on May 2. The CBI is investigating the role of Mr Chidambaram for the clearance he gave to Malaysian firm Maxis to buy 100 percent of Aircel, the investigating agency told the Supreme Court today. The CBI also said it had made this known to Mr Swamy, when he asked about the issue.

The BJP MP had said that Mr Chidambaram illegally granted the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to the Rs 3500-crore Aircel-Maxis deal in 2006. Mr Swamy had filed a petition in the top court on the issue and last month was asked by the court to show "some concrete documentary proof" of Mr Chidambaram's role in the alleged irregularities.
