Srinagar: Five militants were neutralised today as troops foiled yet another major infiltration bid along the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri sector in the north Kashmir district of Baramulla. The total tally of terrorists killed has risen to 12 with the thwarting of the fourth infiltration bid at LoC in north Kashmir since Wednesday. A soldier was also martyred and two others were injured during the counter insurgency operation yesterday.
Defence Ministry spokesperson Rajesh Kalia told UNI that troops detected a group of militants sneaking into this side of border from Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) at Uri sector in Baramulla this evening. When challenged and asked to surrender, militants opened indiscriminate firing with automatic weapons. Security forces retaliated, he said, adding two militants were killed in the initial exchange of fire. Reinforcements were rushed and a search operation was launched near the LoC in Uri sector.
Col Kalia said contact was again established with the militants later in the evening during which three more infiltrators were gunned down. He said search operation is still going on in the area when the reports last came in. On May 26, two Pakistani Border Action Team (BAT) members, who tried to infiltrate into this side of LoC at Uri sector to carry out an attack on soldiers, were eliminated. Six more militants were neutralised in the same sector on the following day when they attempted to sneak into the Kashmir valley from across the border. (UNI)
