Thane: Three elderly family members, including the wife of a freedom fighter, allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison at their residence in Vashi, the Navi Mumbai Police said on Sunday.

The deceased were identified as Mohini 87, the widow of freedom fighter Narandas, and two siblings Dileep 67 and Kanta 65.

Briefing about the case, Vashi police station Inspector Pramod Todarmal said, “The police received a call on Saturday morning about the deceased having medical complications. Hence, they were rushed to the civic hospital where they died on Saturday night.”

“No suicide note was found at their house,” he said, adding that the trio may have taken the extreme step as they were reeling under financial crisis.

“The bodies were sent for post mortem while a case of accidental deaths has been filed,” he apprised.

However, the family lawyer of the deceased, Advocate Vinod Gangwal, has raised eyebrows over the suicide, asserting that the case needs to be probed by independent agencies to reach the truth.

“There is something more than financial crisis which needs to be probed, as the family was also into legal battle with the police” he asserted.

He further said, “The police were also penalised for their lapses by the courts. While, some of the family members were also arrested in a case.”

The deceased family had long standing monetary disputes and they had filed police complaints and sat on hunger strike regarding these issues.

In the year 2012, they had penned a letter to the President of India and said that they will end their lives if they don’t get justice. (UNI)
