The higher reaches of Lahaul-Spiti in Himachal Pradesh remained in the grip of icy cold conditions on Saturday with water sources beginning to freeze as minimum temperatures across Himachal continued to hover between minus sex to ten degrees, according to the Meteorological Centre Shimla.

In the midst of the prevailing cold wave, key stations recorded sharp dips: Kukumseri minus 5.6 degrees, Keylong minus four degrees, Kalpa minus 1.4, Manali 0.6, Shimla seven , Mandi 5.5°C, Una six and Dharamshala 7.8 degrees, indicating widespread chill from high hills to lower regions.

Despite the biting cold, tourists continue to wait eagerly for fresh snowfall in the tribal areas. The IMD has indicated light spells of snow or rain over Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, Chamba, Kangra and upper Kullu on December 7, which may further boost winter tourism in the coming days.

Hoteliers in Shimla and Manali stated that bright sunshine, clean air, and the anticipation of snowfall in the higher reaches are likely to draw more visitors over the weekend. “This is the best weather window—clear days with crisp temperatures,” said a hotelier in Manali.

Meanwhile, dry weather across most parts of the state has increased fire incidents, prompting authorities to urge caution.

According to the District Disaster Management Authority, Lahaul-Spiti, several high-altitude stretches remain affected due to freezing conditions. The Gramphu–Batal (NH-505) road is closed, while the Gramphu–ATR North Portal–Sarchu route remains open.

The Darcha–Shinkula and Sumdo–Kaza–Gramphu (NH-505) up to Lossar stretches are open, though movement beyond Lossar towards Batal remains suspended. The administration has announced that vehicular traffic on the Manali–Leh highway would remain open till December 10, depending on weather stability.

With another western disturbance approaching, the region prepares for fresh snowfall that may finally fulfil the expectations of tourists waiting for winter’s first major spell.<>
