Thanjavur: In a shocking incident, a newly wedded couple was hacked to death, apparently in a case of ‘honour killing’ by the girl’s family at Thulukkaveli village near Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district on Monday evening.

Police said S.Saranya (24), who is working as a nurse in a private hospital at Chennai, secretly eloped with V.Mohan (31) a couple of days ago despite stiff resistance from the girl’s family as they belong to different castes.

When their marriage came to light, the girl’s family invited them to her native Thulukkaveli for hosting a feast.

When the couple reached the village Monday evening, Saranya’s elder brother S.Sakthivel (31) and his kin Ranjith (28) attacked them with sickles.

Both Saranya and Mohan were killed on the spot.

Senior police officials visited the site and held inquiries.

The bodies were moved to the government hospital at Kumbakonam for post-mortem.

The Cholapuram police have registered a case and are searching for Sakthivel and Ranjith, who were absconding. (UNI)
