New Delhi: The Congress today slammed the GST Bills brought before Parliament in the present form and took strong exceptions that the government has sought to undermine the role of the Rajya Sabha in its passage. "You are depriving yourself....," Congress Member M Veerappa Moily told Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in the Lok Sabha , who is also the Leader of the House and said the Upper House of Parliament - which is the "council of states" should not have been ignored in legislating the uniform tax law.
Contradictory to what Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has said the GST laws being brought in such manner is in effect a threat to federal structure, he said. "If they (Rajya Sabha members) have any self respect left, they all should resign," Mr Moily said. The Congress Member was referring to the government decision to push the GST Bills as 'money bills' wherein the Rajya Sabha cannot have much say in its passage or suggesting improvements. (UNI)
