Bhind: As many as 21 prisoners were injured – eight of them grievously – when incessant precipitation resulted in collapse of an old common wall of barracks six and seven at approximately 0500 hrs on Saturday within the District Jail constructed here in 1958.

Prison officials – assisted by inmates – extricated victims from under the debris and rushed them to an infirmary. One critical case was referred to Gwalior divisional headquarters. Prior to the incident, prisoners alerted the Jailer that plaster fell off the wall in question. Just as the barracks were being opened, the accident occurred. The correctional facility – with an initial capacity of 172 – houses 282.

“I have written to the Public Works Department regarding the seepage,” Jailer OP Pande said.

Collector Sathish Kumar S said that an inquiry would be conducted. (UNI)
