New Delhi: The Delhi High Court today rejected a petition seeking the use of Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) along with electronic voting machines during the April 23 Municipal Corporation polls. Justice A K Pathak, dismissing the plea of Aam Aadmi Party and a nominee Mohammad Tahir Hussai, said the court cannot take decision at the eleventh hour as it will amount to ‘stalling’ the municipal corporation elections, scheduled for Sunday.
The Arvind Kejriwal-led dispensation had alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government at the Centre has tampered with EVMs during some of the recently-concluded Assembly elections and bypolls. In its plea, the Kejriwal government sought the court’s direction to both the Election Commission of India and the state Election Commission to use second generation EVMs to ensure transparency in voting.
