Mirwaiz placed under house arrest, Malik arrested, no relief for Geelani

Srinagar: Chairman of moderate Hurriyat Conference (HC) Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq has been placed under house arrest while Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief Mohammad Yaseen Malik was detained today. There was also no relief for chairman of hardline HC Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Shabir Ahmad Shah who remained under house arrest and Duhtaran-e-Milat (DeM) chief Asiya Andrabi was lodged in police station. Mirwaiz was again put under house arrest today, a spokesman for the HC Advocate Shahidul Islam told UNI.
 

He said since there was call for Kulgam Challo today, a large number of security forces and state police personnel have been deployed outside the Nigeen house of the Mirwaiz to prevent him from moving out. JKLF chairman Malik was also taken into custody from his Maisuma residence to prevent him from joining the march, a spokesman for the front said. He said a police party raided the house of Malik and later took him into custody this morning.

Meanwhile, chairman of HC Geelani also remained under house arrest since May last year when he returned from New Delhi. A spokesman for the HC said a large number of security forces and state police personnel remained deployed outside the Hyderpora residence of Mr Geelani, who was not even allowed to offer Friday prayers in a mosque since restrictions were imposed on him. He said two senior leaders of the amalgam Shabir Ahmad Shah and Mohammad Ashraf Sehrayee also remained under house arrest. DeM chief who was taken into custody, along with her assistant Fahmeeda Soffi, remained lodge in women police station Ram Bagh. (UNI)
