“No T-shirts please”: Tripura DM notified dress code for government employees

Agartala: The District Magistrate (DM) of Unakoti in North Tripura Dr Vishal Kumar imposed restrictions on dresses for the employees in the offices of the district while advising them to avoid casual costume and must wear formal attire.

In an order, DM directed the employees, “All staff of this office should wear formal shirts and pants/trousers during office duty henceforth and the female staff is also requested to maintain decent dress code (unspecified) within the purview of office decorum.”

However, silent about the traditional dresses of the people belonging to different communities.

He observed that some staff wear T-shirts while performing duties in the office which looks indecent and it is not under the purview of office decorum.

Earlier, Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Dr Sushil Kumar had issued a similar direction for the employees and officers during government duty.

In 2019, the Tripura government decided to introduce a dress code for the teachers and non-teaching staff of the schools to further smoothen the academic atmosphere on the campus under the newly launched Vidyajoti mission but it was not implemented.

The department took initiative to design unique and separate dress codes for primary, upper-primary, and secondary-level teachers (both male and female) keeping certain parameters in mind.

To preserve the cultural pride of the indigenous communities, Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (ADC) administration made wearing their respective traditional dress compulsory every Monday.

The Chairman, Chief Executive Member, Deputy Chief Executive Member, Executive Members, and Members of the development council have also worn the traditional attire of their respective communities on the day. (UNI)
