Over 140 illegal immigrants not possessing valid documents, detained by Jammu Police

Jammu: More than 140 illegal immigrants who were not possessing valid documents, have been detained and sent to jail by the Jammu Police during a day-long exercise after summoning them at Maulana Azad Stadium here. 

Official sources here said, “the illegal immigrants (Rohingyas) were summoned by the Jammu Police to get their records like identity cards and refugee cards, issued by the National High Commission, verified.”

They said that the police have started collecting their records and other details, adding, “the exercise has been set into motion to ascertain the number of Rohingyas population illegally settled in Jammu city and on Saturday, 148 were found without valid documents and they were mostly singles and couples having one child.”

“Illegally settled immigrants will be deported back to their native places,” they added and said that earlier in the year 2017 and 2018 also, the police had verified the credentials of these illegal immigrants.

Meanwhile CRPF troops were deployed along with the police at the entrance gate of Maulana Azad Stadium where the Rohingyas families were summoned with their identity cards and displaced cards issued by the United Nations.

Pertinently, in some of the recent incidents, some illegal immigrants were arrested by Jammu Police in crimes like theft, drug trafficking and were possessing fake documents.

However, some of them were also allegedly found involved in anti-national activities, including the terrorist activities.

As per reports, more than 10,000 illegal immigrants are settled in Jammu, but security agencies believe that the number is much higher.

They are staying in localities like Narwal, Maratha Basti, Talab Tillo, Rajiv Nagar, Qasim Nagar and many are working with contractors at the Railway Station, Brick Kilns, Shops and other trades.

Official sources said that many illegal immigrants are also operating as rag pickers in the city and a healthy number is involved in begging menace.

“This population is also settled in Samba, Kathua, Rajouri and Poonch districts but the exact details are unavailable,” they said. (UNI)
