New Delhi: In an attempt to phase out old Rs 500 notes, after Rs 1000 from the market, the government has reduced the closing date to December 2, 2016 from December 15, 2016 of using the notes at petrol pumps and for airline tickets at airports.

Old Rs 500 notes cannot be used for purchase of petrol, diesel and gas at the stations operating under authorisation of public sector oil marketing companies and for buying airline tickets at airport counters, the Finance Ministry said in a notification.

It is being believed that the sudden decision was taken after a report showed that facility is being misused at petrol pumps. However, the old note will be accepted for some utility bill payments as well as at railway ticketing counters and public sector undertaking buses for purchase of bus tickets till December 15. (UNI)
