Prez polls to be held on 17th July

New Delhi: The Election Commission today issued a notification for the polls to elect the 14th President, to be held on July 17. The notification was issued on behalf of the EC by the Lok Sabha Secretary General, the returning officer for the election for the post of President. As per the notification issued by the EC, under sub-section (1) of section 4 of the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952, for the holding of an election to fill the Office of President of India, the nominations for the post of the President can be filed said office between 1100 hrs and 1500 hrs on any day (other than a public holiday) by June 28, 2017.

The notice added that each nomination paper should be accompanied by a certified copy of the entry relating to the candidate in the electoral roll for the Parliamentary constituency in which the candidate is registered as an elector. It added that every candidate shall deposit or cause to be deposited a sum of Rs 15,000 only. 'This amount may be deposited in cash with the Returning Officer at the time of presentation of the nomination paper or deposited earlier in the Reserve Bank of India or in a Government Treasury and in the latter case a receipt showing that the said deposit of the sum has been so made is required to be enclosed with the nomination paper,' it said.

The notification said the scrutiny of the nomination papers would be held on June 29. It said that the last date for withdrawal of candidature is July 1. Poll, if necessary, would be held on July 17. The notification sets in motion the process for the election of the 14th President of India. The term of President Pranab Mukherjee comes to an end on July 24. (UNI)
