NewDelhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today paid tributes to freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on his 120th birth anniversary and said the leader's "valour" played a major role in giving India the liberty. "I salute Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on his birth anniversary.

His valour played a major role in freeing India from colonialism," the Prime Minister said in his tweet. "Netaji Bose was a great intellectual who always thought about the interests & well being of the marginalised sections of society," Mr Modi said, adding, it was honour for his government "to declassify files relating to Netaji Bose & fulfil a popular demand pending for decades".

Mr Modi also informed that files relating to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose are available on "http://www.netajipapers.gov.in". Netaji Subhas Bose was born in Cuttack, Odisha on January 23, 1897. A number of functions have been organised in different parts of the country to mark the occasion.

In Delhi, floral tributes will be paid to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in the Central Hall of Parliament. In a tweet, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also paid tributes to the Netaji. The opposition Congress in a missive in the micro blogging site said, "Netaji Bose exemplified Freedom of Thought & Action.
