Priyanka is 'General' of Congress, no need of her campaigning in fields : Azad
, Thursday, 16 February 2017 (18:21 IST)
Lucknow, Feb 16 (UNI) AICC General Secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad today said that Congress star campaigner Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was 'General' of the party and there was no need of her to campaign and go in the fields.

"Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is our General and there is no need for the Commander to go in the fields. She is doing the management and deployment work of the Congress leaders in the campaign," the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha told a press conference, adding that the Congress-SP alliance is all set to sweep the Assembly polls.

"Priyanka was instrumental in the formation of this alliance and she had done all the restructuring. She is more required to the work of management in the party rather than campaigning," he added.

The statement comes in the wake of Ms Vadra skipping campaigning in Rae Bareli and Amethi where she intensively campaigned in the 2012 elections. He also claimed that the alliance was sweeping the first two phases in the elections so far. The Congress leader also said at present there is no discussion on the Prime Minister's post between the alliance. "Rahul Gandhi is already a PM candidate and we will stress for it after the UP Assembly polls," he said.

SP General Secretary Ram Gopal Yadav had said Akhilesh Yadav would be the PM candidate of the Party. Commenting on the confusion in some seats over candidature of both SP and Congress candidates, he said "in some seats we have decided to go for both candidates as either of one would win but in some other seats weak candidates will withdraw in support of the stronger one." "We will sit today here to assess these seats and plan accordingly," he added without commenting on what the party will do against Maroof Khan, who has refused to withdraw his candidature against the SP candidate from Lucknow (central) seat even after party's directive.
