Row over PM's 'Shamsaan-Qabristaan' remarks in UP; Congress to approach EC

New Delhi: A big political row has surfaced over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's election speech yesterday wherein he had said "if a village receives funds for a graveyard, then it should also get for cremation ground". The Congress today said the party will will approach the Election Commission (EC) against the Prime Minister and demand actions. A leader in Congress party's legal cell, said such remarks were aimed to polarise elections on religious grounds and amount to violation of poll conduct.

Congress spokesman Randeep Surjewala also endorsed the view and said, "Only a leader who has lost the elections on ground try to make such speeches to polarise the election mood in the state". Instead, he said, the Samajwadi-Congress alliance under Akhilesh Yadav and Rahul Gandhi have pledged development and this has been "endorsed" by the electorate in country's most populous state. The controversy pertains to Mr Modi's speech in Fatehpur yesterday wherein the Prime Minister has said, "If a village receives funds for a graveyard, then it should also get for cremation ground... If you provide uninterrupted power supply for Eid, then you should also do it for Holi".

The Samajwadi Party also said that the poll panel needs to act on the same. The Akhilesh Yadav-led outfit is reportedly also outraged over BJP attacks that the UP government had tried to ensure uninterrupted supply of electricity during Ramzan in order to garner minority votes. Among others Lalu Prasad, RJD chief, also criticised Mr Modi on the same. "Prime Minister is making below the belt remarks, these people want to communalise the society," Mr Prasad said. (UNI)
