Chennai: A senior citizen collapsed and died, while five voters were injured when a concrete sunshade of a polling booth collapsed and fell on them in separate incidents in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday.
While the senior citizen died at a polling booth in Papanasam Assembly constituency in Thanjavur district, the sunshade collapse took place at Kandilan near Mudukulathur in the southern Ramanathapuram district.
The senior citizen died soon after casting his ballot.
District Election Officer and Collector M.Govinda Rao said the deceased was identified as Arjunan (62) of Ayyampettai.
He fell unconscious after coming out of the booth.
Arjunan was immediately rushed to the government taluk hospital, where the doctors declared him brought dead.
A report from Ramanathapuram said the voters were waiting in queue to exercise their franchise in the elections being held to elect the 16th Tamil Nadu Assembly, when the sunshade collapsed in a polling booth.
Election officials and police rescued the injured and rushed them to the government hospital for treatment. (UNI)
