Chennai: In a shocking incident, an unidentified person allegedly attempted to sexually assault a second year girl student in the sprawling Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M) campus following which the institution began an investigation into it.
A statement issued by the IIT-M said that an incident happened on the intervening hours of Sunday/Monday morning (July 24/25), which was reported to the Institute after about two days of the incident by a friend of the student.
The Institute immediately began the investigation, screened camera footages and shared pictures of almost 300 people, who matched the description given by the student.
However, she is yet to positively identify anyone. Identification parade of over 35 contract labourers, who were on duty that night was also conducted. But the student was unable to identify her assaulter, the statement said.
IIT-M said all the gates of the campus are adequately secured and at every 100m a Security Guard was deployed.
The Institute also has buddy system in place and facility to call for Institute bus along with a Security Staff at odd hours.
The student is not interested in filing a police complaint and the investigation by the institution was still continuing, it added.
The incident took place a couple of days after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister warned that the government will not remain a mute spectator against harassment of girl students in any form, including physically and sexually and that the perpetrators would be punished stringently as per law. (UNI)
