Strong tide sweep away 84-year-old British woman tourist at Mamallapuram beach

Chennai: In a tragic incident, an 84-year-old woman tourist from England drowned in the sea off the Bay of Bengal in the tourist sport of Mamallapuram, about 55 km from here, on Monday evening.
 
Police said her body was washed ashore on Tuesday.
 
The British tourist, identified as Bridget Taylor, had come to Mamallapuram along with her son Rupert about a week back and had been staying in a hotel since then.
 
On Monday afternoon, both Ms. Taylor and her son, after visiting the famous Shore temple, when to the beach when a strong tide pulled Ms.Taylor away from the coastline.
 
Rupert, who saw her struggling, attempted to rescue her, but in vain.
 
Upon receipt of information, police personnel from the Mamallapuram station went to the spot launched search operations and recovered the body which was washed ashore.
 
After a preliminary investigation, her body was sent to the Chengalpattu Government Hospital for post-mortem.
 
Efforts are on to send the body to England by air.
