Twitter India appoints Vinay Prakash as new Resident Grievance Officer

New Delhi: Twitter India has appointed Vinay Prakash as its new Resident Grievance Officer (RGO) under the new digital rules of the country, according to the microblogging company's website.

As per the information on Twitter’s website, the new RGO will be based out of Poovayya & Co office in Bangalore.

On July 8, Justice Rekha Palli, who is hearing the case concerning Twitter before the Delhi High Court, had hit out at the US-based technological company for its delay in appointing an India-based officer for grievances redressal required under Article 4(d) of Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.

The court had also warned that Twitter is facing Contempt of Court for failure in clarifying that the Grievance Officer appointed was interim in nature.

Earlier, the microblogging giant had appointed Dharmendra Chatur as its interim resident grievance officer for India as required by the IT rules. However, Chatur stepped down last month.

It also sought eight weeks from the Delhi High Court to appoint a grievance officer in the country and said it would make its first compliance report public by July 11.

As per the new IT rules that came into effect on May 26, the appointment of three officers--chief compliance officer, nodal officer, and grievance officer--are mandatory for social media platforms with more than five million users and they have to be residents of India. (UNI)
