Srinagar: Three militants were on Wednesday killed and a jawan was injured in an encounter which ensued after security forces launched a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in south Kashmir district of Kulgam.
Official sources said that following specific information about the presence of militants, a joint CASO was launched by Special Operations Group (SOG) of J&K police, Army and CRPF at Chimmer area in Kulgam on Wednesday.
However, they said when security forces were moving towards the target area, militants hiding there fired at them with automatic weapons. 'The security forces retaliated ensuing in an encounter,' they said, adding two militants were killed in the exchange of fire.
They said one more militant was killed in the encounter in the evening while a security force jawan was injured. Earlier, it was reported that a militant had surrendered.
They said the operation was still going on when the reports last came in, adding the identity of the militants is being ascertained. 'Additional security forces have also been deployed in adjoining areas to maintain law and order,' they added. (UNI)
