Lucknow: SP Rajya Sabha MP Amar Singh, described as an 'outsider' by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, is likely to be assigned an important role during the election campaign of the ruling party in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
Though intensely disliked by the Chief Minister and his uncle Ram Gopal Yadav, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh had elevated Mr Singh's status by nominating him as the member of Central Parliamentary Board on December 8.
Earlier, the SP supremo had appointed Mr Singh as General Secretary of the party in September.
Now, the party has decided to make the Thakur, star campaigner of the party during the coming Assembly polls to campaign in those Assembly segments, where there are sizable numbers of Thakur voters, a senior party leader told UNI here today.
Elevation in the status of Mr Singh by the party supremo is being interpreted in the party as the attempt by Mr Mulayam to quell the challenge to his leadership and establish his absolute control over the party apparatus. (UNI)
