Chandauli (UP): Four people, including three labourers, died due to asphyxia after they came into contact with poisonous gas while cleaning a septic tank in the Mughalsarai area of Chandauli district here in Uttar Pradesh, police sources said.

Police sources said the incident took place late on Wednesday in Deendayal Upadhyaya Nagar, where Bharatlal Jaiswal was getting the septic tank of his house cleaned.

"While sanitation workers Vinod Rawat (35), Kundan (42) and Loha (23) were cleaning the tank, they smelt poisonous gas and fell unconscious," they said.

Police sources said after the workers fell in the tank, Ankur Jaiswal (23), son of the building owner, tried to rescue them, but he too fell in the tank.

"The victims were somehow pulled out of the tank and taken to the trauma centre and district hospital, where doctors declared them dead," they said.
