New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is leaving for Chennai to pay his last respects to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa who passed away in Chennai last night. Mr Modi is expected to arrive at Rajaji hall in the Tamil Nadu capital at around 1200 hrs.

The Prime Minister has said her demise has left a huge void in Indian politics. The iconic leader passed away at 1130 hrs at the Apollo Hospital in Chennai. She had suffered a massive heart attack on Sunday.

PM, Rajnath among first to condole Jayalalitha's death

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first to condole the death of AIADMK supremo and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalitha. "Deeply saddened at the passing away of Selvi Jayalalithaa. Her demise has left a huge void in Indian politics," Prime Minister wrote in a twitter message. The Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh also condoled the death of Jayalalitha. "Deeply saddened to learn of the demise of Tamil Nadu CM, Selvi Jayalalithaa.

She was a powerful voice for the weaker sections of the society," Singh said in a tweet within minutes the news of Jayalalitha's death spread like wildfire in the electronic and social media. "She always worked for the benefit of the poor and needy. She has left an indelible mark in Tamil Nadu politics with her enduring legacy," Home Minister said.

BJP chief Amit Shah also in his posting at the micro blogging site said: "Saddened by the demise of Tamil Nadu CM J.Jayalalithaa ji. I extend my deepest condolences to her party and followers in this hour of grief". In his twitter message, Rahul Gandhi, Congress Vice President wrote: "We lost a great leader today.Women,farmers,fishermen &the marginalised dreamt through her eyes.We will miss Jayalalithaa ji,Amma to millions".

Rahul, Ghulam Nabi Azad to attend Jayalalithaa's funeral

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, along with Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad and AICC general secretary in-charge of Tamil Nadu Mukul Wasnik, will attend the funeral of state Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, who died of cardiac arrest in Chennai last night. AICC media in-charge Randeep Surjewala said Mr Gandhi will pay tributes to Jayalalithaa at the Rajaji Hall where her body has been placed. Thereafter, he will also attend her funeral. Sources said Mr Gandhi left for Chennai soon after the obituary reference to the departed leader in Parliament. Jayalalithaa, hospitalised since September 22, suffered a cardiac arrest on Sunday and passed away late last night.

Kejriwal Condoles Jayalalithaa's death

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today expressed grief over the demise of his Tamil Nadu counterpart and AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa. "Very sad to hear the demise of Amma. Nation has lost an icon, President says on Jaya's demise

President Pranab Mukherjee today expressed deep grief over the death of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa, and said that in her passing away, the nation had lost an icon who was loved and admired by millions. In a series of tweets, President Mukherjee described her as ‘’one of India’s charismatic and popular leaders’’, who was a ‘’visionary and able administrator.’’

He said her contribution to the progress and development of Tamil Nadu will be long remembered. Ms Jayalalithaa, who suffered a cardiac arrest last evening, died at the Apollo Hospitals in Chennai. The 68-year-old leader, who had been ailing for quite sometime, breathed her last at 23:30 hrs.

Sonia mourns Jaya's demise, describes her as 'towering figure'

Congress President Sonia Gandhi today expressed deep grief over the death of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa, and described her a ‘’towering figure’’ in the country who won admiration of millions of people. In a statement here, the Congress President said Ms jayalaithaa had unique and deep empathy with the needs of and hopes of poor people and put in place policies that immeasurably improved their life.

Ms Gandhi said the AIADMK leader faced many ups and downs in her life and political career and was know for her intrepid spirit and administrative qualities. ‘’The Congress party, my family and I personally share the grief and pain of the people of Tamil Nadu, and her devoted AIADMK supporters who have lost their beloved Amma,’’Ms Gandhi said in a statement here.
