Really! Asia’s cleanest village is in India !

Shillong: A small village which won the status of being the cleanest village (2003),is still one of the neat and clean village of Asia. The most amazing fact is that it is located in India .Yes ,many of you may have not came across this fact, but "Mawlynnong Village" is also known as god’s own garden and for all the right reasons.The village is located in the East Khasi Hills district of the Meghalaya state, India. Mawlynnong is located 100 Km away from Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya.

All houses here have functional toilets since 2007, there are bamboo dustbins all over the village, even the dry leaves fallen from the trees go straight into the dustbin, plastic bags are banned, and smoking is prohibited. Mawlynnong gets its own manure which is converted from the garbage dug into a pit. People not only clean their houses, they step out to sweep the roads and planting trees is a part of their lifestyle too.

The major occupation of the locals is agriculture with betel nut being a main crop.There are about 95 households in this village, with literacy rate of 100%.There are small tea shops in this village. Simple food too is available at these stalls. In fact, the food served here is so delicious that you will be left craving for more when you leave Mawlynnong. Vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian options are available here.The weather in Mawlynnong is pleasant all through the year. Still the best time to visit Mawlynnong, Meghalaya is monsoon. (WD)
