Dhaka: West Indies were 41/3 in its second innings at stumps, leading Bangladesh by 154 runs on day three of the second Test, here on Saturday.Nkrumah Bonner (8) and nightwatchman Jomel Warrican (2) were unbeaten at the crease.
Earlier, Rahkeem Cornwall five-for (5-74) helped West Indies to bowl Bangladesh out for 296 in reply to visitors' 409 and take a 113-run first innings lead. Fast bowlers Shannon Gabriel (3-70) and Alzarri Joseph (2-60) also contributed well with the ball.
In the morning session, Mohammad Mithun and Mushfiqur Rahim started day three positively. Mushfiqur brought about his 22nd Test half-century with ease and the hosts were in complete control.
However, the West Indies captain, Brathwaite, brought in Cornwall to bowl and the change worked wonders for the visitors. Mithun was dismissed by Cornwall. He also removed Mushfiqur two overs later as the batsman miscued the reverse sweep and ended up giving a simple catch to cover.
Bangladesh needed someone to rebuild for them and Liton Das and Mehidy Hasan did just that. They joined forces to negate the West Indies bowlers and stuck to the plan. They first avoided the follow-on and then turned their focus on eating into the deficit.
Liton was the first to bring up his half-century, his seventh in the format. Later, Mehidy also brought up his half-century. The partnership also crossed the century-mark and by tea, Bangladesh were 137 runs behind with both Liton and Mehidy looking set at the crease.
West Indies clawed back in the final session as Liton was the first to depart in the fourth over after tea. Two balls later, Cornwall dismissed Nayeem for a duck – completing his second five-wicket haul in Tests.
Gabriel then joined the party, removing Mehidy for 57 in the next over. The last-wicket pair of Taijul Islam and Abu Jayed could only add 13 more runs as the hosts folded on 296.
Looking to make amends after collapsing, Bangladesh struck back with a wicket in the fourth over as Kraigg Brathwaite gloved it to the 'keeper in Nayeem Hasan's over.
West Indies barely got time to regroup before Shayne Moseley became Mehidy Hasan's 100th victim in Tests. Mehidy became the fastest Bangladesh bowler to the landmark, achieving the feat in only his 24th match.
John Campbell then paired with Nkrumah Bonner to stabilise the innings but he got out in an unfortunate matter. Bonner and Jomel Warrican then saw off the remaining four overs with little trouble.(UNI)
