Chandigarh: Asian Games athletics gold medalist Hakam Singh on Tuesday passed away in Sangrur, Punjab.
He was undergoing treatment at a private hospital for liver and kidney ailments for some time.
Punjab Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi expressed grief over the demise of Singh.
Apart from winning gold in 20 km race walk event during the 1978 Asiad at Bangkok, Singh also received the Dhyan Chand award in 2008.
He also served the nation as havildar in the 6 Sikh Regiment after joining the Army in 1972.
Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh had sanctioned a sum of Rs.5 lakh for his treatment. (UNI)
