Asian Games: PV Sindhu settles for silver in women’s singles

Jakarta: India’s PV Sindhu settled for Silver after losing to World Number 1 Tai Tzu Ying 13-21, 16-21 in straight games in the final of the Women’s Singles event at the 18th Asian Games held here on Tuesday.
 
Sindhu lost 13-21, 16-21 to Tai Tzu Ying in the summit clash. No Indian had ever reached the final of a singles event at the Asian Games before the 23-year-old from Hyderabad, who lost 13-21 16-21 to Chinese Taipei’s Tai in just 34 minutes.

This is India’s first Silver medal at Asian Games in the Women’s Singles event.

The World Number 1 had a 18-11 lead in the second game. Sindhu seemed to have given up. Tai Tzu Ying smashed but Sindhu failed to collect it. She trailed 8-13 in the second game.

Things went bad for Sindhu, when Tai Tzu Ying took a lead in the second game 8-5 after winning the first. India’s PV Sindhu lost the first game against Chinese Taipei’s Tai Tzu Ying 21-13 in 16 minutes.

Tai Tzu Ying again smashed but Sindhu failed to collect it. Though, she was trying to turn things in her favour. She trailed 15-19 and lost the game with 13-21, 16-21.

It was Sindhu’s third defeat in a big final this year, having lost the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games title clash to Saina Nehwal and the World Championship summit clash to Spain’s Carolina Marin. (UNI)
