Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, whose IPL journey has often failed to match expectations, has pulled out of the upcoming IPL mini-auctions scheduled to be held in Abu Dhabi on December 16.
Maxwell, 37, nicknamed “The Big Show” for his explosive talent early in his career, has featured in every IPL season since 2012 except 2019. Despite his reputation, his overall numbers in the league remain modest — 2819 runs in 141 matches at a strike rate of 155+ and an average below 24. With the ball, he has taken 41 wickets at an economy of 8.30.
Announcing his decision on Instagram, Maxwell wrote:
“After many unforgettable seasons in the IPL, I've decided not to put my name into auctions this year. It's a big call and one I make with a lot of gratitude for everything this league has given me. The IPL has shaped me as a cricketer and as a person. I have been lucky to play with world class teammates, incredible franchises, and perform in-front of fans whose passion is unmatched. The memories, challenges and the energy of India will stay with me forever.”
While Maxwell did not cite a specific reason, it is widely believed that franchises have become reluctant to invest in him following several inconsistent seasons. Despite attracting high bids in past auctions—often surprising analysts—data-driven evaluations in recent years have shown that his returns rarely justified his price tag.
Maxwell has crossed 500 runs in a season only once, scoring 513 runs at a strike rate of 144+ in 2021. Over the last two seasons (2024 and 2025), his form dipped further, accumulating just 100 runs in 17 matches. Released by RCB before the IPL 2025 mega auction, he was picked up by PBKS for Rs 4.20 crore but managed only 78 runs and 4 wickets in 9 games before being ruled out with a fractured middle finger. PBKS subsequently chose not to retain him.
Given his recent form and age, experts believe Maxwell was unlikely to attract significant interest at this year’s auction — making his withdrawal unsurprising.
