After India’s 2-1 T20 series win against Australia, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav took a subtle dig at the much-discussed Asia Cup trophy controversy during a post-match press conference in Brisbane.
Expressing his joy after lifting the series trophy, Suryakumar remarked, “It feels great to finally get to touch the trophy. Felt it in my hands, when I was handed over the trophy for the series victory.”
Following the rain-hit final match at The Gabba, India was declared the series winner. During the presentation, Suryakumar also mentioned India’s recent Women’s World Cup triumph, saying, “A few days back another trophy arrived in India our women's team has won the World Cup. That trophy has also arrived back home. It feels great and getting to touching this trophy as well feels good.”
His statement appeared to be a subtle jab at Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi, referencing India’s earlier refusal to accept the Asia Cup trophy from him.
The controversy began after India won the Asia Cup final on September 28, when the team refused to receive the trophy from PCB chief and ACC president Mohsin Naqvi, citing his anti-India stance. As a result, the trophy has still not been officially handed over to the Indian team.
Efforts are currently underway to resolve the issue. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia discussed the matter with Naqvi during an ICC meeting in Dubai. Saikia confirmed that a separate meeting was arranged between the two boards in the presence of the ICC vice-chairman and CEO.
“It was really good to start the process of negotiation. Both sides cordially participated in the meeting which took place on the sidelines of the ICC board meet,” Saikia said, adding that the matter is expected to be resolved soon through constructive discussions.
