Gautam Gambhir lauds Virat Kohli's hunger as 9,000 Test runs loom

Bengaluru: Virat Kohli's hunger for runs is as intense as ever. Even after more than a decade at the top of the game, his desire to dominate with the bat has not waned. With the Indian cricket icon nearing the remarkable milestone of 9,000 runs in Test cricket, his form and focus are again in the spotlight. Team India's former opener and now coach, Gautam Gambhir, was effusive in his praise for Kohli's dedication ahead of the first Test against New Zealand at Chinnaswamy Stadium beginning October 16.

Reflecting on Kohli’s early days, Gambhir responded to UNI query by saying, "I remember opening with him in his Test debut in Sri Lanka. His hunger is always there, and that's what makes him a world-class cricketer."

Kohli, known for his fierce determination, has consistently proven that his appetite for success goes beyond numbers. Gambhir emphasised this, adding, "He is always hungry to score more runs, and that hunger never dies down. I'm sure he'll be just as eager in the upcoming series in India and the tour of Australia."

As India gears up for a three-match home Test series, followed by a challenging tour to Australia, Kohli’s experience and resilience will be critical. While he has enjoyed a stellar career, his recent form in Test cricket has raised some eyebrows. Since early 2022, Kohli has averaged in the mid-30s—modest by his high standards. Yet his hunger remains undiminished, a quality that has seen him rebound in the past and one that fans hope will power him to another peak.

Gambhir highlighted the importance of this drive: "Once he gets into the run-scoring habit, he is pretty consistent thereafter."

With the 9,000-run landmark within reach, Kohli will be eager to silence any doubters in the upcoming matches. Whether playing on home soil or facing the formidable Aussies abroad, his hunger for big runs could once again make the difference, adding another chapter to his legendary career.
