Gonasika, the men's hockey team based in Vizag, on Saturday announced Bollywood megastar Sanjay Dutt as their brand ambassador for the upcoming revamped Hockey India League (HIL) season.The team, spearheaded by Head Coach Jagbir Singh and Mentor MM Somaya, is set to compete in the opening match against Delhi SG Pipers at the iconic Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela on December 28.
Sanjay Dutt, Hindi actor, brings his immense star power and passion for sports to the Gonasika team. Known for his iconic roles in films such as "Munna Bhai" and "Vaastav", Dutt’s involvement is expected to draw significant attention to the league and further elevate Gonasika’s profile."I am incredibly honoured to stand before you today as the brand Ambassador of Team Gonasika," Dutt said in a statement.

The actor also expressed his gratitude to the team’s key supporters, including Ramesh DP Das and Stevin Shipping, and praised the leadership of legendary former Indian captain Dr Dilip Tirkey. "I am also thrilled to be a part of this family, supporting their team to make Gonasika Vizag a powerhouse in the league," Dutt added.
The Gonasika squad, assembled at the HIL Auction last month, boasts a formidable mix of seasoned players and promising newcomers. Notable Indian players include Manpreet Singh, Mandeep Singh, Birendra Lakra, SV Sunil, SL Uthappa, and Nikkin Thimmaiah. Young talents like Araijeet Singh Hundal and Vishnukant Singh further strengthen the squad.
The team has also secured international players of high calibre, including FIH Rising Star of the Year 2022 Timothee Clement from France, Australian Timothy Howard, and several standout players from Great Britain such as Oliver Payne, Jack Waller, Jacob Draper, Lee Morton, and Struan Walker.
