Chattogram: India wrapped up the match by 188 runs on the final day of the first Test against Bangladesh at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium here on Sunday.

India removed the last four wickets in 50 minutes of the play. Mohammad Siraj bagged Mehidy Hasan Mirza (13) who chased a wide ball, giving a dolly to Umesh Yadav at backward point.

Shakib Al Hasan (84), who was short of partners at the other end, went after the Indian bowlers and smoked some boundaries, but was cleaned up by Kuldeep Yadav while going for a hoick.

The tail of Bangladesh did not wag long and submitted to Kuldeep and Axar Patel, conceding a 1-0 lead to India in the two-match Test series.

With this victory, India climbed to the third spot on the World Test Championship points table. They will move to the second spot if South Africa lose their match against Australia in the Brisbane Test, which is underway at the Gabba.

India have five tests remaining in the cycle, out of which four against Australia in India next year.

First innings failure was the bane of Bangladesh and their valiant show in the second was not enough, after India declared their second innings with 500 plus lead in their bank.

India dominated the proceedings, barring a couple of sessions on Day 1 when India were struggling at 48/3. But the dogged Vice Captain Cheteshwar Pujara (90) and Shreyas Iyer (86), pulled India out of the woods.

Then Kuldeep Yadav (40) and Ravichandran Ashwin (58) put up a 92 runs partnership that helped India go past 400 mark in the first innings.

After bowling out Bangladesh for 150 with a five-fer from Kuldeep, India declared their second innings at 258/2 with the help of Pujara and Shubman Gill, hammering centuries in a flurry.

With a gigantic 512 runs staring at them, survival was the first focus of Bangladesh for the next two days.

Najmul Hossain Shanto and debutant Zakir Hasan batted beautifully by putting on 124 runs for the first wicket, before Zakir was the fourth batsman to return to pavilion after cracking his maiden ton.

Rest of the batsmen did not do much, except skipper Shakib, who missed on his sixth Test century by 16 runs. Bangladesh folded their second innings at 324 runs after they could not withstand the magic of Kuldeep and Axar, who bagged three and four wickets respectively.

Kuldeep was adjudged player of the match for his 40 runs knock in the first innings and eight wickets haul in the match.

The next Test is at Dhaka, a venue where India lost both the ODIs. If regular captain Rohit Sharma returns from injury, it would be a hard decision to drop Shubman, who cracked a century. That's the puzzle for the Indian think-tank to solve.

Brief scores: India 404 (Cheteshwar Pujara 90, Shreyas Iyer 86, R Ashwin 58; Taijul Islam 4-133, Mehidy Hasan Miraz 4-113) and 258/2 decl. (Shubman Gill 110, Cheteshwar Pujara 102*) beat Bangladesh 150 (Mushfiqur Rahim 28; Kuldeep Yadav 5-40, Mohammad Siraj 3-20) and 324 (Najmul Hossain Shanto 67, Zakir Hasan 100, Shakib Al Hasan 84; Axar Patel 4-77, Kuldeep Yadav 3-73) by 188 runs.
